Get a Perfect Rug For Your Living Space

by Dale Burrows

A rug brings your room personality and coziness, whether it has the elegance of a traditional Oriental or the casual look of natural jute. How can you know which is best for you with so many different styles, patterns, and materials available?

Choosing the ideal rug for your space might be difficult, but you can make it much easier by using the correct design tricks. Here are some recommendations for choosing the ideal rug for your room, as well as some cleaning advice.

How To Get The Right Rug?

When it comes to buying a rug, you should pay attention to its size, pattern, and the material of your rug.

Determine the size

A too-tiny rug can make the room smaller and give it a floating, unfinished look that takes away from the decor. On the other hand, a rug that is too large will make the room look cramped and crowded.

Therefore, you need to measure the area you want to cover and take into account the furniture that will serve as the anchor for your flooring.

Our best advice: Always go big rather than small. Then, you may either put the front legs of all of your furniture pieces on the rugs, all of the legs of your furniture pieces on the rugs, or half a step away from the rug because the rug is in the middle of the room.

Decide the pattern

Patterns may appear to be overwhelming in small spaces. So, choosing light, solid colors for your decor is a good idea if you are working in a crowded or cramped room. A solid rug may bring a calming, grounding effect when paired with patterned furniture as well.

In contrast, although patterns do not appeal to everyone, a patterned rug can really liven up the space. Likewise, you can get a patterned one if you simply can't bear the idea of your room being plain and lacking in texture. Choose light, airy designs with lots of space between them instead of tight, repetitive graphics like small chevrons.

Keep in mind, though, that balance is the key! If your space is already equipped, consider this before selecting a rug. But if the rug is one of your first purchases, consider which design is best for you.

Consider the material

Fibers for rugs range widely. Although there are numerous alternatives, the fibers used in a rug affect how it appears, how long it lasts, and how stain-resistant it is.

One of the most popular and long-lasting rug fibers is wool. It is robust while remaining exceptionally soft and comfy, making it a fantastic option for a high-traffic space like a living room or dining room. Also, wool rugs inherently resist water and dirt, and the elastic material rapidly returns to its original shape. It is easy to clean and hyperallergenic as well.

Alternatively, you can choose to use synthetic fibers like nylon, polypropylene, and viscose. Over time, they have been enhanced to mimic the properties of natural fibers. They may be utilized in moist situations, are family-friendly, and some types can be used outdoors.

Generally speaking, we highly recommend purchasing 100% wool rugs, not blends, due to their superior quality and durability.

However, a synthetic fiber would be a greater option if you only need a visually appealing floor covering and you are not currently looking for extremely high quality. Compared to wool rugs, polypropylene rugs are less expensive and much simpler to clean but are still soft underfoot.

So, a good rule of thumb is to consider your budget and the practicality of the rug’s material in a certain location. Are you willing to spend money on a high-quality rug?

How To Clean A Rug Yourself?

To keep the smooth texture, color, and pattern of a rug and make sure it lasts for many years, you must know how to clean it properly. Following are some tips for cleaning and caring for some popular materials:

A wool rug

It is not difficult to clean a wool rug on your own.

Regular vacuuming is necessary to remove dirt, dust, and other debris from a wool rug. Just like a new wool carpet, a new wool rug may initially shed fibers, so be aware of this. You should vacuum your rug at least once every week, preferably twice, to get rid of shed fibers.

A manufacturer-recommended shampoo or a solution designed for wool rugs should also be used every time. Alternatively, mix a cup of mild, non-biological laundry detergent with a bucket of ice-cold water.

A propylene rug

Cleaning polypropylene rugs won't be one of your concerns if you already have one or want to get one for your house because they are made to resist high-traffic areas where spills and stains are practically inevitable.

The most typical method is to vacuum it frequently. If you find it a daunting task, doing it periodically is fine.

Although many rugs may also be cleaned with steam cleaning, it must be done carefully. Keep the steam cleaner's head at least 6 inches away from the rug when using one.

A silk rug

Silk is exquisite-looking and luxuriously soft to the touch. That's why this material is rather sensitive and must be handled cautiously.

The surface of the rug may be delicately swept with a soft broom. This will aid in clearing out any leftover material that could be deeply embedded in the silk threads.

When it comes to washing area rugs, water and vinegar are often used to remove stains and smells. Mix the water and vinegar and then dip a towel in the mixture and gently wipe the stain. Remember that you may have to repeat this step many times to remove the stain or odor completely.
